Badrutt’s Palace

St. Moritz, Switzerland

Winter at Badrutt’s Palace in St. Moritz, Switzerland, is a storybook vision of towers and turrets, frosted with snow and glittering with lights—an iconic Alpine hideaway favored by royals and celebrities since it opened in 1896. In summer, however, golf is front and center, and Badrutt’s guests have privileges at the 126-year-old Engadine Golf Club, one of the oldest in Europe. The club plays on two separate and very different courses. The original Samedan course, flanked by giant larch trees, runs along the flat valley floor and has broad fairways and many water features. The ZuozMadulain, opened in 2003, has challenging elevation changes as it flows along the side of the mountain. Back at 5-star Badrutt’s, everything is just what the name implies: palatial. The rooms and suites are elegant and grand, equipped with every “mod con.” The Wellness spa is sublime, and fine dining includes Andreas Caminada’s Michelin-starred IGNIV and Le Restaurant with an award-winning wine cellar of 30,000 bottles and such treasures as a 1900 Lafite Rotschild. At Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’s La Couple, guests can sample sushi and sashimi—or immerse themselves in the seven-course Omakase Chef’s choice. Richard Leuenberger, newly appointed Managing Director sums it up: “I’m amazed by all the stories that have been created here over the years and am inspired time and time again by the charm and history of such an iconic hotel.
